The live classes are “semi-online” distance learning courses. The advisor-led live discussions are conducted through Zoom. We say “semi-online” because most of the studies are conducted offline, exploring the ideas of great authors from real books and printed study guides. After the offline, independent study portion of the school week, students will take an online reading comprehension/accountability quiz and share with their advisor a brief, informal meeting preparation activity. The Zoom discussion then takes place according to the class schedule, and, if the students are registered for advisor grading of their formal writing assignments, they visit the course page on the STAA Student Zone again late in the week if/when they have a writing assignment to submit.
Required technology for meetings is simple: Live classes use Zoom for camera-free web meetings, ensuring privacy for students (and their families) during lively seminars with the advisor and peers, requiring a device (ideally a laptop, computer, or tablet with keyboard) with a reliable internet connection and a headset with a boom microphone. A smartphone can be used in a pinch.
