First the general answer to "how much time does the course need?":
Full-time high school classes at St. Thomas Aquinas Academy typically require about five hours per school week, including study, coursework, and discussion. Strong readers and writers may complete the work in less time, but we recommend reserving five full hours weekly to follow the academic plan outlined in the STAA Study Guide.
- Key Course 1 (Writing or Reasoning with English Mechanics) and Key Course 2 (Math): Plan for one hour of study per day, five days a week. Depending on the student’s needs, additional time may be required for labs, skill-building exercises, revisions, and/or corrections.
- Other four Key Courses (e.g., Religion, History, Literature, Fine Arts, Economics, Government, Languages, or Science): These can be scheduled flexibly—either one hour daily or in longer, block-style sessions on alternating days (e.g., Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday), with a shorter wrap-up session on Fridays.
How do these general notes apply to the live classes? Live classes at St. Thomas Aquinas Academy follow the same STAA Study Guide course plans as all our students. The key difference is that live classes feature an advisor leading weekly discussions, rather than teaching-parents. Regardless of who guides the discussions, the weekly course plans suggest when and how to prepare and participate. Since live class students have an advisor as an external accountability partner, they may benefit from visiting the STAA Student Zone an extra one or two times each week to review online reminders, access any special study tools provided by the advisor, and submit any formal or informal assignments through the website. Even with those extra visits and live Zoom scheduled discussions, the live class students should spend only about five hours per school week on one live course.
