My daughter is wondering if Sign Language could be considered a high school credit for a foreign language?

Sign language cannot be counted toward the required foreign language credits for graduation. Only Latin, German, French, Italian, or Spanish may be used to meet this requirement.  However, a formal American Sign Language course can be counted for up to one semester of Fine & Applied Arts credit.

To receive Fine & Applied Arts credit for the sign language course, please complete the Non-STAA Course Form and include:

  1. A detailed course description
  2. Weekly lesson plans
  3. Any other supporting materials

You can find the Non-STAA Course Form (NSC Form) in the Appendix of Forms on the member site.

Next Steps:

If your daughter needs the foreign language credits specifically, she'll need to choose from the approved language list. If Fine & Applied Arts credit would be helpful for her graduation requirements, the sign language course could be a great option.  You'll find a semester box for "formal ASL" to mark off on the Key Courses / Diploma Application document (this document can also be found in the Appendix of Forms and parts of it can be previewed on the STAA Diploma Program page).  Please let us know if you have questions about either path or need help with the Non-STAA Course Form.
